Edward Cardini's Artist Statement
My art is a dynamic interplay of various techniques, combining elements of realism, impressionism, expressionism, and post-cubism. I have a penchant for bright colors set against dark backgrounds, a vivid contrast that brings a striking vibrancy to my work. My preferred media include pastels and oils, and in recent years, I have developed a strong affinity for working with oil pastels.
When it comes to selecting subject matter, I am guided by my interests and inspirations. I am constantly seeking out ideas, and sometimes, I let spontaneity take over by starting with a few random lines that evolve into a cohesive piece.
An essential aspect of my work is creating compositions that are visually engaging, leading the viewer's eye around the picture plane before ultimately directing them to the focal point. I am particularly drawn to contrasts and dramatic lighting, which fuel my imagination and creativity.
My inspirations are diverse, ranging from beauty and drama to psychologically compelling material and the quest for self-understanding. Music and poetry also play a significant role in guiding my artistic vision.
My technique has a unique tactile dimension. I frequently use my fingers to blend both soft and oil pastels, a method that gives a personal touch to the texturing and shading of my work. I find that certain surfaces, like those that are heavily sanded, require a different approach. Occasionally, I integrate fibers into my oil paintings, adding another layer of complexity and intrigue.
Through my art, I aim to create a visual journey that fascinates and resonates with the viewer, inviting them to explore the depths of color, contrast, and composition.
