Cardini’s work is animated by what he calls “moments of time”—each painting an attempt to crystallize the emotional or spiritual atmosphere of a fleeting instant. Drawing upon studies in psychology, comparative religion, literature, and myth, he explores recurring themes of time’s passage and shifting emotional states. His approach oscillates between instinctive mark-making and carefully orchestrated composition, sometimes following diagrams and photographic studies, at other times venturing onto the canvas with only an open mind as his guide.
